Exercise and The Brain
More Resources
Exercise has an immediate and positive effect on the brain while simultaneously protecting it. It is known that exercise has a multitude of ways in which it impacts the brain and the overall health of a person. Due to the release of chemicals in the brain brought on by exercise, it can improve overall mood and improve quality of life for those with mental illnesses. One of the most well known neurotransmitters that are released in the brain during and after exercise are Endorphins, also known as the "happy chemical." Endorphins act as an analgesic, reducing pain and stress. Endorphins are released through the Pituitary gland of the brain when signals of pain and stress appear. Endorphins are also known to give the same feelings as that of narcotic drugs such as morphine, due to their similar molecular structures. Endorphins are a natural pain killer and trigger your body's reward system. Another notable neurotransmitter associated with exercise is Serotonin. Exercise increases Serotonin levels and helps to improve overall mood. A lack/deficiency of Serotonin most often leads to depression.

Exercise Effects on Cognition
It has been discovered that regular exercise can increase verbal memory, psychomotor speed and executive function. Exercise improves cognitive function by providing a constant flow of oxygen improving blood flow. This allows for oxygen to travel efficiently throughout the body. Exercise also decreases the risk of neurodegenerative disorders and helps to repair the brain. The protein responsible in repairing the brain and keeping it in an orderly function is Brain-derived Neurotropic Factor. BDNF is responsible for maintaining neuronal cells, keeping them healthy and creating new ones. BDNF also contributes in the ability to stay in focus on tasks at hand.
